A woman who killed Leopoldo Romero has been sentenced to 21 years in prison in the city of Santa Fe. Leanela Ayelen Garnica, 31, was found guilty of the murder she committed in early 2023. The trial, presided over by Judge Cecilia Labanca, concluded with a public verdict. According to information provided by the Ministry of Public Prosecution of Santa Fe, Garnica fired more than a dozen shots at Romero, who was hit by at least four projectiles. He died the same day at Iturraspe Hospital from his injuries. Prosecutor Estanislao Giavedoni commented on the sentence: "We are in agreement with the ruling, as the amount of the penalty imposed is close to the 23 years we had requested in our arguments." He also emphasized that the defendant fired "with a firearm" with the intention of killing Romero. "The homicide took place in a violent context in the Coronel Dorrego neighborhood. In 2023, it was common to resolve interpersonal conflicts through the use of firearms," concluded the prosecutor.
